When a pet needs treatment, it’s not just their nerves you have to calm — yours matter too.
From giving medicine to a finicky cat, to putting eye drops in a wiggly dog, to keeping an alpaca still — animals often have their own ideas about what they will and won’t tolerate.
Recently, I had to treat one of my alpacas for an eye injury. She’s normally one of my hardest to catch, and getting her to cooperate seemed like it might be impossible… until I used a simple animal communication technique that works for all kinds of pets.
The Challenge: An Eye Injury in a Reluctant Alpaca
When I noticed her eye was irritated, I knew she’d need a close exam. But letting me approach? That was another story.
I set up a small pen so she couldn’t sprint into the open pasture — a chase I’d never win. Then I used her favorite warm-weather treat, the garden hose, to lure her inside.
Even then, she was still tense. That’s when I shifted gears from “catching” to communicating.
The Turning Point: Using Visualization to Calm Her
I stopped, took a deep breath, and pictured in my mind exactly what needed to happen:
-
Me walking up calmly.
-
Her standing still.
-
The halter sliding on easily.
I sent those images silently to her — no words, no sounds. And she stood still.
Staying Calm Through the Tough Part
When I leaned in to check her eye, she flinched again. I repeated the process: deep breath, steady energy, clear mental pictures.
She relaxed.
That’s when I saw it — a small piece of debris lodged in her eye. My own stomach tightened (eye issues make me squirm), but I knew if I tensed up, she would too.
By keeping my breathing slow and my mind focused, I kept both of us grounded. I gently removed the debris, rinsed her eye with sterile wash, and soothed it with a warm compress.
When it was time to take off the halter, I visualized the release — and she waited calmly until I was finished. Then she got her well-earned reward: a joyful spray from the hose.
How You Can Use Visualization to Calm Your Pet
Whether you’re trimming nails, cleaning ears, or giving medicine, you can use this same approach.
Here’s how to start:
-
Breathe first. Your calm energy sets the tone.
-
Picture the process step-by-step. Show your pet, in your mind, what’s about to happen.
-
Use positive phrasing. In your thoughts, say “stand still” instead of “don’t move.” Animals respond better to clear, affirmative cues.
-
Stay patient. If your pet resists, pause, reset your breathing, and try again.
This simple method, drawn from animal communication and intuitive energy work, can make treatments easier, safer, and far less stressful — for you both.
