Update to Charley’s Status
I share with great sadness that Charley was unable to recover. He passed peacefully with the vet’s assistance. They discovered that he had numerous lesions in his brain as a result of his illness, and he would never recover. He touched all of our hearts. What an amazing spirit he had for such a young animal. The circle of life can be brutally hard. Yet grief can be such a lesson in resilience. It’s a reminder of the fragility of life and how important it is to make the most of each day. Charley was such a reminder. For one so young, he touched so many lives. And he helped lead a new colt to his wonderful family. Because of Charley’s special story, he attracted someone who rescued a mare from auction. The mare wound up being pregnant and gave birth to a foal about Charley’s age. Sadly, his mother couldn’t overcome the severe neglect she had suffered, and this new foal was orphaned. He has become the perfect addition to Charley’s family as they work through their grief. And they have provided an incredibly loving home to this baby who needed a family to be loved by. I believe with all my being that Charley helped facilitate this young horse to be with his heartbroken family. Life works in mysterious ways. And Charley’s story will continue to live on in so many of us that he touched.
Sometimes, a story comes along that touches your heart in ways you never expected. Charley’s journey is one of those stories—a little colt whose unshakable will to live has inspired everyone around him.
At just 10 days old, Charley faced a dire diagnosis: tetanus. His condition was critical, and the odds were stacked against him. His family, desperate for answers, reached out to me. They wanted to know if Charley had the will to fight, as euthanasia was being considered.
Despite the grim prognosis, I could sense Charley’s determination, and so could his family. Together, we decided to give him a chance.
A Fight for Survival
That first night, I began boosting Charley’s energy system and continued doing so every few hours. At the same time, I taught his person how to do energy work, and she threw herself into the effort wholeheartedly. She traveled for hours daily to sit by Charley’s side, offering him love, comfort, and healing energy.
Through it all, Charley’s mom—the horse who brought him into this world—remained nearby, quietly lending her presence and love.
Charley’s condition was heartbreaking. His tiny body was wracked with severe spasms. Yet, even in those moments, we held on to hope. We celebrated the smallest signs of progress—a slight decrease in spasms, a flicker of awareness.
After a week of tireless effort, Charley began to improve. Slowly but surely, his body responded. Eventually, he was well enough to leave the hospital and continue his recovery at home.
The Journey Isn’t Over
Today, Charley is a survivor—a rare and miraculous case of a horse overcoming tetanus. His story is already an inspiration, but his journey isn’t over.
Charley’s back legs remain locked, preventing him from standing or walking on his own. His family has built a special lift to help him stand, but his progress has stalled. To take the next step, Charley needs intensive physical therapy from experts at a specialized facility.
This treatment offers hope, but it also comes with significant costs.
